Roundstone News 15th July 2007

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Well, I wonder how every body faired out after yesterdays torrential rain and this mornings rain, not only was the front of my garden like a flowing river, but to really rub it in I had terrible problems with major leaks in the house, my poor Spanish tenants were running around with buckets and bowls to catch the leaks, god only knows what they were saying, and plus the fact water was coming through the smoke alarms which sent the whole system ballistic, “god what chaos”, the only person that was having fun was my resident duck.

Roundstone Dog Show:
I think Ann gave you a run down on the successful pony show that was held last week in Roundstone of which I am told was a great success. The dead line for the applications will be by the end of November 2006. Samples of work to Richard Duc de Stacpoole with a short CV Errisbeg House, Roundstone, Connemara, Co Galway.

By the way at the King gallery, here in Roundstone, Yvonne King will be bringing in some of her new works, and prints of her past works, and a new collection of semi precious Jewellery and as an added bonus some lovely Irish knitted ware, and will remain open right through the season from Tuesday to Saturday

Roundstone Regatta:
I would like to take the opportunity to wish the Roundstone Regatta Committee the very best of luck with the forth coming regatta next weekend, and hope that there will be a fair wind, and as an added attraction Paddy shoulders was telling me that there will Seano’s Dancing on a specially built stage for the Dancers down by the Pier, and talking about boats I gather there was yet again a terrific turn out for Mc Dara’s day, with a mass held on the island, by the parish priest from Carna which was held on the 16th July.

Carna Lifeboat:
There were a few people from Roundstone that had entered into a draw for a car, to raise funds for a new life boat based in Carna, the car was today won by some body in Galway, Ann was telling me that 100,000 was raised for the life boat.

Michael & Yvonne Mahon:
Our congratulations on behalf of the community and of course myself to Michael & Yvonne Mahon on the berth of their new son yesterday, I could not ascertain yet what they are going to call him, any way mother and son are both doing well, and another brother for Liam and I have also just heard that Aongus and Nicola Flavin who are our two doctor’s, Nicola has just given berth this morning to a baby girl, so there you are a little playmate for Nicola & Aiongus’s first born Orla; we have a right little population explosion at the moment, and a few more to come.

I do not have a lot for you this evening, however hopefully there is enough to cover the few mins with Roundstone and the Connemara Community Radio

Roundstone Gun Club:

On Saturday Pat Conneely and myself went up to Longford to pick up 90 more pheasants to prepare to release in to the wild some time in mid August around our area, with six locations, last years birds have done reasonably well, I have to say, and this lot is a complete new strain, and I have the impression allot stronger, however time will tell. It now becomes vital to do allot more vermin control; I am told that three people lost their hens through the mink last week. I had an interesting experience yesterday which tells quite a nice story, all my young birds escaped from their pen, but luckily, I have had a resident Cock through out last year, (I have the feeling that some thing must have happened to his Missus), anyway the point being he was able to collect all the loose birds, and within twenty minutes with his help I was able to pen them again, at this very moment he is still walking around the perimeter making a sort of cooing noise, which seems to settle the young birds, I have the feeling he has great expectations, actually you may or not know that each cock will look after 12 hens, thank god he was around because with out my resident cock I would have lost them, interesting is not

Two more traps for the grey crows and Magpies will be built, one will be placed on Innisnee and the other placed some where on Errisbeg Mountain.

Our thanks to Ronnie Robbins who sponsored the Birds and feed for the second time.

Tidy towns:

The village is looking very well for the Tidy towns competition, our thanks to all that have made a serious effort this year, what is very noticeable this year is the amount of wall building on the Ballyconneely side of the village, Mickey Nees wall and Geraldine Coynes and all the hedges clipped, on the Galway side all along the road on the Galway side, beautifully strimmed thanks to Paul Delapp. The Traffic lights are now in operation, keep your fingers crossed. But we still have the old age problem of litter control and the right time to put out the rubbish for collection on the Tuesday, so from now on as an extra effort to get over this Father McCarthy has agreed to add in the news letter, stating what goes out for the Tuesdays, but it has to said that the rented accommodation must take responsibility to inform their guests, not to put out the rubbish on a Saturday when they leave, and secondly to put out the correct bags out on the Tuesdays, last week its was the recycle bags, I counted five green bags out, needless to say ripped by cats, dogs and Birds, I only hope the judicators, if they were around did not see this. So please all those that are renting their houses give the correct information to their guests and take the responsibility of this litter problem.

Ballyconneely Show:

This next Item, is not exactly Roundstone news, but it has come to my attention, that as you all know, the Ballyconneely show is on the 15th July, and to encourage young people to take part in the pony world, I must congratulate the committee in brining in an extra day i.e. the 14th July for the young to take part and as far as I know there will be a gelding class, ridden classes, a championship and an overall best rider, actually to come to think of it this is what Paddy the yank is trying to encourage in Roundstone, and talking about Paddy we would just like to wish him good luck for the second Roundstone Pony show next weekend, and hope the weather will be nice to him

Irish Nights:

The 2007 Traditional Irish nights as a community project is starting again on Wednesday 4th July in the top part of the community Hall at 8.30 sharp, with local musicians and Dancers etc and as usual the host will be Christina Lowry, I have to say no one better. The admission is €8.00 and children €4.00

Roundstone Open Arts week 27th July to the 30th July 2007

This is a warm up programme in preparation for the 11th Roundstone Open Arts Week 2008. I stepped aside two years ago, hence the open arts will go back two years, so it will be the 11th open Arts under our Banner, with the help from Ann Conneely.

The idea is to work the 11th over the two weekends, already we are already meeting some interesting people who are prepared to help us with some interesting ideas, so just keep in touch with the website, www.roundstone.ie

The residency will also return to Errisbeg House for the first three weeks in June for the year 2008.
