Roundstone News 29th October 2007

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Well I must say I should think its been one of the most busiest October bank holiday, that I can remember, helped by a few local celebrations.
At this stage I will have to add, some champagne was flowing here at my own home tonight, I have staying with me Gilles Morchipont and his family who were the instigators for the Twinning of Roundstone with Noyelles Sous Lens five years ago.
Also, I have just heard, from Peter Keane that Tom Connolly who is a brother of Paddy, won 15,000 from the Clifden Rugby Club Lotto, so the point of interest here, this is the third time that Roundstone has got the winning ticket, this time sold at Mary kings Bar.
Talking about Rugby, yet again our own Roundstone man Emmet Ferron playing in his first Ail match excelled him self, good man Emmet

Deidre & Bridge King:
Congratulations to Deidre King who celebrated her 30th birthday, yesterday with her sister bridge, Bridge is just a little older, the celebration took place in The Roundstone Hotel.

Shane and Marion McDonald:
Also congratulations to Shane and Marion McDonald, who had their baby son Philip christened with Father McCarthy yesterday.
Maureen McDonagh & Joseph Harris:
Our best wishes to Maureen McDonagh and Joseph Harris who will be tying the knot in their forth coming marriage on Saturday 3rd November, in the Star of the sea church here in Roundstone, then on to the Westwood for their reception. We wish you long life together.

The Mink:
I received an E.mail from the Zoology Department, NUI Galway for a mink survey here in Connemara.
It would greatly be appreciated, if anybody would contribute to this survey by keeping any mink which you may catch, for scientific analysis. Quite a large amount can be ascertained from the corpse of an animal, including age, diet, fitness, and reproductive potential, this can tell a lot about the condition of a population and the impact that control measures will be having on it.
The dead mink can be placed in a plastic bag and kept in a cold place, preferably a fridge or even better a freezer. You can then contact me by email or on my mobile phone and I will collect them whenever is convenient for you. At last there is the possibility to find out how is best to control these horrors.

Gurteen Graveyard:

A note for the Dairy, on the 18th November which is a Sunday at 2.30, there will be a Mass with Father McCarthy within the grounds of the grave yard in Gurteen, what would be nice if every body that has relations in the grave yard we would like to ask you to clean them up in preparation for the Mass, its a good opportunity to tidy up some of the graves, naturally it will be weather permitting. By the way FAS have being doing some work already re the walk ways, this is already very helpful, now it’s up to us.

Christmas Fair:
We are hoping to plan a Christmas fair down in the community Hall in Early December, so if anybody out there wants a table for the fair just get in touch with me, and as usual all proceeds will go to the Roundstone Youth Club. The dates in theory are the 8th and 9th of December.
PatMcCann, Mary Gorham:
We may have another local Roundstone artist coming on stream, Pat Mc Cann husband of Mary Gorham of Innishnee is having his first exhibition of his paintings on the November 3rd 6pm at the Ballybane library, launched by the Mayor, Councillor Tom Costello, and it would be nice to support this young man.

Fireworks:
And to end off, just a small word of warning, a few days ago we had a dog that went missing for a few days for one reason or another, the good news is that “Charlie was found” the point that i am trying to make, next Wednesday is Halloween, there could be the possibility of a few fireworks will be let off, dogs are highly sensitive to the noise of these bangers, mine included, so be sure to shut them up on that night, in fact most animals are nervous.

Well, that’s all from me for this week, please don’t forget that Wednesday is Halloween, have fun, but do take care and act responsibly, finally don’t forget its the recycle blue and white bags that will be collected tomorrow

Joanne Conneely:
I gather that there was no news last week, and I am not surprised as Ann was very much laid up, with back and flue on top of that, plus the fact that Ann’s daughter Joanne gave birth to an early baby girl on Thursday, and I am glad to say both are doing well, and the wee baby is putting on weight and should be back to Roundstone some time soon, so congratulations granny Ann, once again, and of course to Joanne on her little daughter Ellie Ann.
News is a little scarce this week, as I have only just got back from the holy Land just two days ago, which was I have to add the most incredible spiritual pilgrimage with the order of Malta I have ever been on, through to Israel and Palestine from and to the Jordan, following the life of Jesus Christ from his birth to the crucifixion to his resurrection and following the sites of his apostles and some restored ruins from the time of the crusaders. If it is at all possible everybody should take the chance once in their lives to have this experience, in fact four from Roundstone as far as I know where also in the Holy Land just a few days ahead of me. I look forward to compare notes with them of this extraordinary voyage.

Festy Lenanne:
Our condolences to the immediate family of Festy Lenanne from Roundstone who passed away in Dublin last Thursday, and will be buried on Tuesday ie tomorrow after Mass at 12pm and finally laid to rest in Gurteen.
May he rest in peace?

Parents Association:

I was asked to thank all those that donated and took part in the Cake sale held yesterday in the Eldon’s Hotel in aid of funds for children’s outings, they were able to raise €693, which will go a long way. There was also a raffle, and first prize went to Mary King, Kings Art, second went to Brian Laffey from the cottages, and third went to Thomas Griffin from the shamrock, so well done everybody.

National School:
You may already know, that Josephine Roach has retired as Principal of the National school, we wish her all the very best for the future, and at the same time our condolences’ for the loss of her mother from Kerry some days ago, May she rest in peace. Nicola Spokes has now taken on the role as principle, we wish her all the luck and I have just heard that Kitty Ryan’s daughter in, Law Aishling Ryan is now permanent teacher, again lots of luck and fun Aishling.
Talking about the National School, the Errislannan riding centre took some of our National School Kids, Lauren and Cian Conneely, Tara Coyne and Lucy Mannion up to the National Stud in Kildare and to visit the Japanese Gardens within the Stud, Now that’s a nice educational trip for the troops.

Bats:
Just to end off on a lighter note, do you remember over the last few weeks, I told you I had to have my roof re done and was very concerned about the piperstralis bats leaving the house, well true to form they did disappear, however last night I noticed they were starting to come back to their old abode, I maybe bats, but glad to see them back, they are so harmless. Good one Sean
