Russell Curran Productions:
On Tuesday morning Sept 23rd Russell Curran Productions will be filming around the Roundstone harbour and the entrance to the village.  In the afternoon they shall be filming Dogs Bay.
The following day they shall be out in the harbour and later at a shop in the area.
This shall cause a little disruption to the village but also great excitement.  They are producing a commercial for Tourism Ireland to promote Connemara for the UK and European Market which  in the long run should be good for future business in Connemara and in particular for Roundstone.

Roads.
On a recent trip to Inishnee I was delighted to see that some work was being done on the road through out the island and speaking to Bridie Davis this morning Bridie tells me that this road has been in a terrible state all summer actually since April last. Recently a local girl Evelyn Woods O’Neill contacted the Keith Finnegan Galway Bay FM to make people aware of the conditions they had to endure and the hardship to their motors.

Waterworks:
Since early last year a boil to use our water had been imposed on us due to an outbreak of cryptosporidium the commercial buildings had to install at great expense I might add, special water filters in order to reassure the tourist trade for the summer. Now I am delighted to report that the work has almost been completed on the water connection between Roundstone and Cashel / Kilkerrin. The lads on the scheme worked hard and long hours to get it to this point, we are informed  the actual switch on for our new system should be happening  in the next week or so.

Now that this is in place we should be asking RDC to put pressure on our councillors and Galway County Council for a proper road surface, from the bog road through the village and out towards Ballyconneely.  We are fed up of the constant patching of pot holes in our area.  The council surface workers do their best but after a day or two of rain the potholes are back again.  It is an unending task.
Youth in Roundstone

This week we saw many of our young people sitting for their driving test and we would like to congratulate the following Christopher McDonagh, Joseph Mannion and Theresa Mannion on all passing for their full licence
So safe driving to you all and keep it under 60

Lower Community Hall
Hopefully now that the lower hall is finally completed we have plans for a party for all to celebrate the opening. Hopefully this will take place before the end of October or early November.

Defibrillator
On Saturday last seven people, Ann Conneelly, Richard de Stacpoole, Stephan King, Mary Mongan, Anne Delapp, Martina Conneelly and Mar ion Mannion attended the CPR course in preparation for the use of the defibrillator. The venue had to be changed at the last moment to my house because a TV was needed for a DVD demonstration. It was a wonderful and simplified course we all now feel confident enough now that if there should be an emergency, god forbid, we would be able to respond with confidence.

Having said that, still some work has to be done on making people aware of how to make contact with each other a doctor should not be available. We also need a few more trained people in the village. Another training session will be held in October

Sea Shore Fishing.
What a lovely sight it was to see loads of fishermen fishing along Gurteen Bay over the week-end in preparation for a competition of same in two weeks time.  The competitor’s fish, well into the evening and it is a really spectacular sight to see all the little lights along the beach.  This has been ongoing for many years and we welcome the fishermen back to our area for this venue.
Hospice Coffee Morning
Malachy Bodhran‘s shop was the venue for the coffee morning in aid of the Galway Hospice and Malachy & Giftie and staff would like to thank everyone for their support and the sum of €214.20 was raised and as usual everyone had a lovely morning.

Birthday wishes
This week we send birthday wishes Cian Conneely who is 9 years old on Saturday to little Mathew Connolly from Erlough and Galway who is celebrating his second birthday on Saturday also.

Congratulations to Diarmuid & Cynthia on having their little son Jack christened last Sunday

Roundstone News 8th September 2008

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Good evening everybody and welcome to the Connemara Community Radio, this is Richard de Stacpoole bringing you some news and up dates from Roundstone.

It’s been a busy weekend in Roundstone what with all the weddings, three to be precise, neighbouring Roundstone, one of them of course was Roisin Ferron and Kevin Burke who were married on Friday, and Michael and Catherine opened their house on the Saturday evening for a truly wonderful evening for all their neighbours, with local musicians playing, there was dancing, and of course the usual banter, then Michael larger than life called a halt to the proceedings for a moment to announce that his other daughter Claire had just got engaged to her man Stephen, therefore we wish them both well, as the same wishes go to the newly weds. Just thinking there is always something special about the community having a night out together in a private House, therefore on a personal note thank you Michael and Catherine for me to be part of the celebrations, “until the next time”

Roundstone has A Bank:
Actually it’s Post Bank which is a new 50.50 joint venture between Fortis Bank and An Post, Postbank is opening up in Post Offices all over the country.
Selling financial products.
Post Bank plan to introduce simple and straight forward products that are great value for money, things like savings, investments, current accounts with internet, banking loans and insurance.
More detail about this can be sought at the Roundstone Post Office, and just ask Michael Reynolds and Collette King

Birthday wishes:
To Patrick McDonagh on reaching his 22nd Birthday today, and the same to Theresa Mannion who will reach her 22nd, birthday tomorrow, I am told on the grape vine that Theresa is feeling very old; don’t worry Theresa you have a long way to go before you get to my age, anyway a very happy birthday to you both.
Dates for the Diary:
Sunday 2nd November, which is all Souls day, Father Mc Cathy has agreed to say Mass up on Gurteen Grave Yard as we did last year at 3pm, I know it’s a long way off, for this date for the diary but that gives us plenty of time to clean up our relatives graves for the occasion.
Thursday 18th September, coffee morning in aid of the Galway Hospice Foundation at the Roundstone Music Craft & Fashion, IDA Park from 10.30 am until the early evening.
Just a reminder, 20th September The CPR training, with the use of the Deffribulator, it’s just for four hours, from 2pm to 5pm. We have already five people, a few more is needed if we the village is going to be safe in the use of the Defibrillator
And of course this coming Sunday is the Champion of Champions pony show here in Roundstone
Finn Mc Coule:
Just quite an amusing story about my little rather cute looking terrier Finn, fast becoming well known has Mary Kings Toby. Finn loves his comfort and is very social, he has the habit of taking off from my place to socialize in the village, he once sneaked in to Rush lake B/B to one of the bedrooms and slept on the bed with out anybody knowing until the next morning, he also socializes with Rosie Mannion in her hair salon and various other places, but last night bet all, some tourists were taking photographs outside the Dalkey Design Shop, so Michelle from Eldon’s went out to see what was going on, to her amusement there was Finn locked in the Dalky design shop preening himself and running around on this very expensive bed with beautiful linen having an absolute ball in his new surroundings of luxury, however luckily Michelle was able to have the door open, out shoots Finn straight into her car, and was duly bought back to his real home, looking very miffed to be back to his own basket, thanks Michelle, so folks watch out before you close your door, himself might be looking for more comfort, trust me has got good taste.

Well that’s all from for this week, Alleluia, Ann will be back next Monday, I hope. Don’t forget it’s the green bags that will be collected tomorrow, stay well and keep smiling.

Pony Show:
The Champion of Champions of Connemara Ponies, took place yesterday in the Show Grounds here in Roundstone and despite a horrendous morning of torrential rain, to which I might add that if this show was taking place in another show ground there would be the possibility of it been abandoned.   But the Roundstone show grounds which Paddy the Yank built for the village and with his excellent planning and lay out, there was never a doubt but that the show would go on.  The ample trailer and car parking space, the seating and the gravel walkways made it ideal despite the rivers of water that seem to be everyplace outside the area, and even the show ground its self after a day when hundreds of ponies passed around on show, still had a lovely green patch in the middle to show off the Champion of all the Champions. There was no doubt it the Judging with Mr Stephan Strang (From Scotland) and from France Hubert Laurant (From France) was of a very high standard. Grace Murphy not only won the reserve Champion, but also won the best turned out handler

Lotto:

Tidy Town Results:
As you all know probably by this time that Westport were the over all winners but this year Roundstone  added yet another few points towards our goal in the tidy towns, our results this year 239 out of 500. With a little help and co-operation we can do a lot better.
Perhaps monthly meetings over the winter to plan a strategy for the next year should be looked into again the usual buildings got a nice mention for Eldon’s & the Roundstone House, Beola Restaurant, and Sheila Magee’s.
The adjudicators spoke about the flowers boxes and hanging baskets in private houses added with Margaret’s new garden at the back of O’Dowd’s.
Well done to RDC and the workers and I am sure they would appreciate some more help if anyone is interested in being part of tidy towns for the year 2009.

Birthday Wishes:

To Michael King who is celebrating his 50th birthday today, congratulations to you and I hope you have something nice planned for the day.
Michael is a very active member of the RDC, and the Regatta Committee also the Marina Committee. We appreciate your involvement and they say with age comes knowledge so Michael keep up the good work.

Dalkey Design Shop:
It is with regret that we learn of the closure of Dalkey Design shop here in the village. Glinis Robbins and Cathy White from Dalkey have been operating this outlet for 10 years but with the downfall in the American business they have decided to call it a day. The shop was aimed at the higher end of the scale and was a great success.
